A meeting of the top leaders of the ruling Unified CPN (Maoist) held Monday morning has decided to launch protests in the streets and in parliament against President Dr Ram Baran Yadav's order to Rookmangud Katawal to work as the Chief of Army Staff despite the cabinet's decision to sack him. The Maoist leaders have said the President's move amounts to a 'coup'.

Talking to media persons after the meeting, Maoist leader and communication minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara said his party would resist the President's move in the streets and parliament. He also informed that the party would challenge the President's 'unconstitutional' move in the court.

"The President's move is kind of a coup. We have come to the conclusion that it underlines the people's aspirations and the peace process," Mahara said.

Likewise, Maoist secretariat member Top Bahadur Rayamajhi said the meeting also the possibility of impeaching President Yadav.

Prime Minister and Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal conferred with consultation with Attorney General Raghab Lal Baidya on the possibility of seeking legal remedy against the President's move.

He is to address the nation at 3 pm after a cabinet meeting today. Maoist central secretariat meeting is expected to start right after the PM's address.

Meanwhile, Maoist cadres have taken to the streets against the President's move and in support of the government decision to sack army chief Katawal.
