India : Oppose Barbaric Repression of Student Community by Harsh Thakor

OPPOSE BARBARIC REPRESSION ON STUDENT COMMUNITY!HOPE THE STUDENTS CAN WITHSTAND A FLAME BY CREATING A TORRENT

On December 10th barbaric repression was unleashed by the police forces on the student community marching for their legitimate rights.

In the era when the forces of globalization and privatisation are enslaving the student community it's resistance is totally justified.

It is heartening that the student community collectively came forward .Such an action is ample testimony for the repression that is to come in future days.

It reminds us of how student rebellions were crushed in Paris in 1968 or how anti-Vietnam war protestors were teargassed.

The entire world people should stand in solidarity with opposing the police attack on the students who symbolize the struggle for the youth of the whole world.

Significant solidarity protests are taking place all over India be it in Kolkata ,Mumbai or Kerala.

The students are challenging the police barricades with daunting courage.

MEDIA COLLECTIVE STATEMENT

These are the good day for the future generation of India; now we want to see who open the mouth in democratic system!!! Around 500 students who marched today afternoon at 1 pm from UGC office, ITO to Parliament Street were attacked with water cannons, teargas and lathis near Le Meridian Hotel, Ashoka Road.

Several students were taken to RML and LNJP Hospital and around 200 students were detained in the Parliament Street police station for more than 3 hours.

Women students were brutally attacked and hit even in their private parts by the Delhi police.

The Delhi police were forced to register FIR against the male police officers for manhandling and threatening them. The media personnel who went to the police station were not allowed access to the students who are detained inside the station.

The students have been protesting in front of UGC for the past 49 days against the University Grant Commission’s [UGC] decision to slash non-NET fellowship for MPhil and PhD students from 21st October 2015. Students from universities across the country under the banner of #OccupyUGC marched to the Parliament from UGC today afternoon demanding responses from this Government which is leaving no stone unturned in selling off higher education to corporates and restricting higher education to an upper class/upper caste male privilege!

It is important to note that this crackdown by the Indian Government is happening in the wake of the WTO negotiations beginning next week. The UGC scrapped the fellowships and the MHRD formed the Review Committee.

The students have been protesting in front of the UGC office demanding answers from the authorities but both have refused to acknowledge the questions. They have also lathi-charged them earlier twice and detained them thrice with the hope of suppressing the movement. But it has only increased the support-base of the student community from across the country.

More and more students from different parts of the country have condemned the government’s move to privatize education and brahminisation of knowledge needs to stop.

The Delhi Solidarity Group condemns this brazen attack on the democratic rights of students to protest. •  OccupyUGC jaari hai! students today came out to against the brutal police repression of the Students protesting the scrapping of non NET fellowship and the privatization of education outside Delhi Police headquarters.

  • Yesterday when the students had taken out a march to Parliament the Police had erected layers of barricades to prevent the students from carrying out their peaceful march. Women protesters were manhandled, grabbed from their hair, groped and dragged on the roads beaten brutally targeting their private parts.

All this was carried out by male Police personals of Delhi Police, several students were gravely injured. Several rounds of tear gas shells were wired at the gathering, the students were water cannoned and brutally beaten by the Delhi Police. The male police officers went ahead and hurled abuses at women protestors and told them that they will be molested like this if they come out to protest again.
More than 50 students were injured in the crackdown 8 of whom have sustained grave injuries. Last night when the agitating students went to Parliament Street Police station to lodge an FIR against the sexual harassment of women the Police officials tried to intimidate and threaten the students with counter FIRs.

  • Today Dis student organization, Coordination committee of OccupyUGC movement, various democratic rights organization PUCL, PUDR, PUCR condemned the Police brutality and demanded that strict action should be taken against the Police officials involved in the crackdown on students. Baby from Disha said while addressing the gathering that yesterday not only were we physically brutalized but our democratic fundamental right to protest was also violated with shamelessness by the Police. We were peacefully protesting however the government is so scared of our voices of dissent that they ordered such a brutal Police crackdown on us. Pankaj from PUCL addressed the gathering and said that all the conscientious individuals should unite and condemn unequivocally the brutal violation of our democratic rights.

  • The OccupyUGC students have been protesting for more than a month now against the scrapping of the non NET fellowship by the UGC, privatization of education and the WTO GATS agreement to sell education by the Government. The Modi Government has however maintained its very contentious silence over the demands of the agitating students. The students today submitted a memorandum of their demands with the DCP stating that strict action be taken against the police officials responsible, and that Delhi Police should issue an apology to the citizens of the country for this violation of their fundamental rights.

  • We shall fight! We shall win! All injured, all scared, scarred and agitated, all disturbed students with the #occupyugc movement reach Police Headquarters, Delhi to condemn brutal attacks on students by the police yesterday on their All India students March to the Parliament. From water canons, tear gas, manhandling and harassing women students, beating up students in custody, consistent crackdowns to silence us.

  • This is an appeal to civil society organizations, students, activists, media and citizens to join us in solidarity in all forms and hear our story. We are at the UGC gate, near ITO metro station gate 3 occupying day and night for the last 50 days. Please join us to intensify our struggle. Students across the country have come together to resist consistent attacks of privatisation on education. Waiting for more voices to unite. Let us write this

  • NOW! WE WILL SHOW YOU THAT OUR PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN YOUR LATHI, CANONS AND TEAR BOMBAY SHELLS.

  • We were protesting peacefully...we wanted to talk to the representative we elect...they have stolen our funding so they never could face us...what faces us instead? Police lathi charge water cannon and tear gas! Yes that is what this government has for the students. We broke the barricades because radical students movement is what we need today.
