More Arrests - Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal
Police re-arrested Uma Bhujel, a politburo member of the Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal, soon after the Supreme Court ordered the government to free her on Friday.
A joint bench of Justice Sharada Prasad Ghimire and Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut had ordered the government to free Bhujel in response to the habeas corpus writ filed by Bhujel’s niece Pratima.
DSP Mohan Kumar Thapa of Metropolitan Police Range said Bhujel was arrested and transported to Nuwakot where she faces an arson case.
Earlier, police had arrested Bhujel from her residence in Balaju on August 28 and sent to Kavre District Police Office.
Bhujel is the second prominent CPN leader to go through a series of arrests on multiple criminal charges after the party spokesperson, Khadga Bahadur Bishwokarma.
On September 3, the SC had expressed serious concern over the continuous violation of the court’s order by the government regarding Bishwokarma's re-arrests.
The two-judge bench of justices Sapana Malla Pradhan and Tanka Bahadur Moktan had expressed the concern. Despite several orders of the SC to release the leader, he is still in police custody.
