Iran: Ali Akbar Velayati criticizes US Senate vote extension of Iran Sanctions Act and calls for Iran and Russia to boost relations

A senior Iranian official has criticized a US Senate vote to extend the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) for 10 years, saying the move is Washington’s revenge for the recent achievements made by Iran and its allies in the Middle East.

“It seems that this [move] is [the US] revenge for successive and valuable achievements made by Iran and its allies in the region, but it will not be successful,” Ali Akbar Velayati, senior adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on international affairs, said in a meeting with Russia's special envoy on Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, in Tehran on Saturday.

He added that such an “inhumane” move by the US to approve the extension of sanctions was a “blatant violation” of last year’s landmark nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.

It also shows the anger of the US and its elements at the recent victories made by Iran and its allies in the region, he reiterated.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will resist against any JCPOA breaches and is quite ready to retaliate in kind,” Velayati said.

He emphasized that Iran would strongly continue to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes in line with international regulations.

“That would not be right that an agreement is signed on one hand and sanctions are re-imposed [against Iran] under different pretexts such as human rights and [alleged] support for terrorism on the other hand,” the senior Iranian official said.

Velayati added that it is “really ironic” that the US, which is a sponsor of different terrorist groups, wants to punish Iran under the false allegation that the Islamic Republic is supporting terrorism because it backs the Lebanese resistance movement, Hezbollah.

The US Senate on Thursday unanimously voted to extend the Iran Sanctions Act for one decade after it easily cleared the House of Representatives last month.

The ISA was first adopted in 1996 to punish investments in Iran over its nuclear program.

The bill needs to be signed into law by US President Barack Obama.

Iran, Russia must continue to expand relations: Velayati

In the meeting with the Russian diplomat, Velayati said Tehran and Moscow should make constant efforts to develop relations.

“New conditions have been created in the region and the international scene, which reminds us that Iran-Russia relations must continue to move forward,” the Leader’s adviser said.

Velayati said futile attempts have been made to damage Iran-Russia relations.

He said West Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East would face a “very sensitive” situation in the future and stressed that Iran and Russia must further boost relations to counter the existing threats.

A protracted state-wide protest has been launched all over Kerala giving birth to a resurrection of the movement against fascism.

Significant that Kerala is hit by the tentacles of R.S.S.fascism more than any state in India bar Uttar Pradesh or Gujarat and that too in one led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

One of the most significant developments in Kerala was the resurgence of the Maoist movement however weak.

Significantly even C.P.I.(M.L.) Red Star led by K.N.Ramchandran has condemned the incident.

All democrats world-wide must give solidarity without fail for the guilty police officers to be punished and democrats like Comrads Ravunni to be released.

The unprecedented protests that erupted following the fake encounter killings of two Maoist leaders Kuppu Devaraj and Ajitha on 24th November in the South Indian state of Kerala seems to have stunned the state.

As the news broke out of the killings in the Nilambur forests in the Western Ghats human rights organizations including Janakeeya Manushyavakasha Prasthanam expressed doubts over the state version.

Following this the social media too were abuzz with protests and demand for a just enquiry. The initial response from the part of Director General of Police Loknath Behra itself that he was too happy over the killings of the Maoists provoked people.

Later when the dead bodies were brought to the Calicut Medical college for postmortem, activists and general public gathered there shouting slogans. Veteran revolutionaries Gro Vasu and M. N. Ravunni, human rights activists Thushar Nirmal and  C. P. Rasheed led the protests.

The incident of killing the revolutionaries created ripples in the ruling Left Democratic Front too.

The second largest constituent of the front CPI itself came strongly against the government version.

CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran said that crushing dissent was not democratic.

He also said that the people in Kerala voted the Left Democratic Front into power not to emulate the Modi government.

Other CPI leaders and Congress party leader V. M Sudheeran too joined him

CPI's youth with All India Youth Federation took out demonstrations in different parts of the state demanding just enquiry into the incident. Revolutionary Marxist Party, Solidarity Youth Movement, Inquilab too staged protest programs in various parts of Kerala.

In the Calicut Medical College, students conducted strike boycotting classes.

Different organizations protesting the killings have now formed an Anti Fake Encounter Killings Front to take up the issues of fake encounters.

On 9th this month a convention is being planned in Calicut and the future course of actions will be chalked out in this convention.
