"Powell said the act of removing the Maoists from the US terrorist list is delayed due to bureaucratic process,"

According to a Maoist source, Nancy J Powell US ambassador to Nepal during the recent meeting with Prachanda said the US government should remove the Maoists from its terrorist list.

Powell assured Prachanda that her government would soon remove the Maoists from the terrorist list. "Powell said the act of removing the Maoists from the US terrorist list is delayed due to bureaucratic process," the source said.

The Maoist chairman, accompanied by senior leader Dr Baburam Bhattarai, told Powell that the Maoists want to maintain good relations with the US.

During the meeting, Powell also encouraged Prachanda to ensure that all Maoist organizations illustrate their commitment to the political process through their words and actions.

The US placed the CPN (Maoist) in its Specially Designated Global Terrorist Entities list in October 2003 through an executive order (no. 13224) signed by President George W. Bush.

Sitaram Yechury of Communist Party of India Marxist meets with Prachanda

Fascinating Interview in Red Star with Ai Ping, Director General, International Department, Communist Party of China

You have met with Maoist leaders during your visit in Nepal. Can you tell us about deliberations you have had with Maoist leaders?

During my very first meeting with the Maoist leaders, I tried to explain that in China, we don’t use the term ‘Maoism’. Actually CM Mao himself opposed the adoption of this term. He believed that ‘Marxism’ is the source of our ideology. And Mao Tse-Tung Thought is only the application of Marxism in accordance with the concrete situation in China. Some people have suspected that maybe Chairman Mao was just being modest. But anyway, we do not use this term.

For example, now we say in China we have two successors in the integration of universal truth of Marxism in the concrete conditions of China. The result of the first success is Mao Tse-Tung Thought, we use the term “thought”. The second one is what we say the theory of building socialism with Chinese characteristics, and this part of our guiding ideology actually consists of three parts. The first part contributed by Comrade Deng Xiaoping and we say the “Deng Xiaoping Theory”, the second part-the better half of our guiding ideologies, is the contribution made by the third generation of leadership. We say Comrade Jiang Zemin and his core, and we use another term for his contribution that is, the important thesis, you will notice we are using still another term, the important thesis of a “three represents”. And the latest success of our party’s radical development ‘scientific concepts of development’ put forward by Comrade Hu Jintao and his comrades. Anyway we have developed such a tradition.

I think in Nepal, you regard theoretical development in a different way. Chairman Prachanda once said that he believes that CM Mao’s contribution in the liberation and development of ‘third world’ countries is so important and so innovative, that he would rather use the term ‘Maoism.’ I don’t want to debate with him what terms we should use, we should go the essence and not stick to dogmas and we should apply the universal principles in an innovative way. We have to change and go along with the times and try our best to understand the objective law of this society and to be innovative in the theoretical development.

Chairman Prachanda has meeting with US Ambassador Nancy J. Powell

Maoist chairman Prachanda and US ambassador met, yesterday, with CPN-M Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to discuss the outcome of the April 10 elections, CPN-M plans for the Constituent Assembly, and the future of US-Nepal relations. This was their first meeting," states a press release issued by the US embassy in Kathmandu on Friday morning.

The US government has labeled the Maoists as a foreign terrorist organization.

Krishna Bahadur Mahara said, "Our first option is to form a government under our leadership in alliance with other parties.

Addressing a May Day rally of workers in the capital, Thursday, Maoist spokesperson and Minister for Information and Communication Krishna Bahadur Mahara said, "Our first option is to form a government under our leadership in alliance with other parties. If they refuse to be part of such government, we are prepared to form government on our own. If they obstruct us in this also, then we will come before you and do whatever you say."

He said there were conspiracies being hatched by power centers from within and outside the country to prevent them from coming to power.

"Whether such centers are inside the country or outside, we want to tell them that while they tried to teach us about peace and democracy, they need to learn it themselves," he said, referring to the democratic practice of allowing the single largest party to form a government. The Maoists had emerged as the single largest party bagging 220 out of 575 seats in the Constituent Assembly election.

Mahara also ruled out demands for disbanding his party's youth wing Young Communist League (YCL). "The people have already endorsed our YCL through the mandate they gave us in the election," he said.

Mahara said 'nationalism and republic' will be the new mantra for the Maoists.

Earlier, addressing the same programme, YCL president Ganesh Pun had said that it was because the YCL 'kept their cool as per the directive of party chairman,' that the election passed peacefully. "The YCL will now immerse itself in the building of new Nepal," he said.

Addressing the programme, president of All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF) Shalikram Jammarkattel, said that rights and interests of workers will be ensure in the new constitution to be drafted through Constituent Assembly (CA

Senior CPM leader Sitaram Yechury on Thursday held parleys with top political leaders of Nepal, including Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and Maoist Chairman Prachanda, ahead of the formation of a new coalition government expected to be led by the former rebels.

Yechury, who arrived Kathmandu on Thursday on a two-day visit to the Himalayan nation, expressed hope that the democratic process of building a republic in Nepal will be consolidated soon.

The CPM leader, who had played a key role in bringing the Maoists to the mainstream politics, met Koirala, Prachanda and Communist Party of Nepal-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal.

His visit assumes significance as it comes in a period of political transition in Nepal following the holding of the landmark Constituent Assembly polls on April 10.

The visit is being seen here as aimed at patching up differences between the Maoists and other major parties including the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML. The Maoist leadership is likely to use Yechury's good offices to garner support for forming a government led by them, sources said.

Yechury told reporters on arrival at Tribhuvan airport here that he was conveying the solidarity of people of India to the people of Nepal for the successful completion of democratic elections in Nepal.
