Senior CPM leader Sitaram Yechury on Thursday held parleys with top political leaders of Nepal, including Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and Maoist Chairman Prachanda, ahead of the formation of a new coalition government expected to be led by the former rebels.
Yechury, who arrived Kathmandu on Thursday on a two-day visit to the Himalayan nation, expressed hope that the democratic process of building a republic in Nepal will be consolidated soon.
The CPM leader, who had played a key role in bringing the Maoists to the mainstream politics, met Koirala, Prachanda and Communist Party of Nepal-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal.
His visit assumes significance as it comes in a period of political transition in Nepal following the holding of the landmark Constituent Assembly polls on April 10.
The visit is being seen here as aimed at patching up differences between the Maoists and other major parties including the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML. The Maoist leadership is likely to use Yechury's good offices to garner support for forming a government led by them, sources said.
Yechury told reporters on arrival at Tribhuvan airport here that he was conveying the solidarity of people of India to the people of Nepal for the successful completion of democratic elections in Nepal.
He affirmed that all decisions in the process of completion of democratic process will be taken by the Nepalese people and their leaders.
