RABAT: AFP Morocco’s pro-reform movement yesterday called a new rally in support of democracy and against violence in Marrakesh on May 8, after 16 people died in a bomb attack in the city popular with tourists. Thousands have taken to the streets in the northwest African country in a number of demonstrations since February 20 demanding sweeping democratic and social reforms.
“We are launching a national appeal to demonstrate in Marrakesh for democracy, against violence and in support of the people of Marrakesh on May 8,” said Aba Dila, an activist of the February 20 Movement.
.The group has been pressing for reforms in the wake of protests that have rocked the Arab world since the end of last year. Major demonstrations were also held throughout Morocco on March 20 and April 24. Yesterday, more than 2,000 members of the February 20 movement joined May Day rallies in the country. The movement also demanded an independent investigation into Thursday’s deadly bombing of a popular cafe in Marrakesh. Its call for a new demonstration on May 8 came in spite of an announcement by King Mohammed VI on March 9 of comprehensive constitutional reforms, including the independence of the country’s judicial system and the separation of powers.Join the Campaign to Free Moroccan Students Now !
