Last Call - Remembering Claudia Jones - Visit to her grave in Highgate Cemetery on 19th February - Rape as a Weapon of War - Public Meeting - 21st February called by the The Pan-Afrikan Voice

Claudia Jones, Pan Afrikanist, revolutionary Communist, and mother of the Notting Hill Carnival was born in Trinidad on 21 February 1915. She emigrated to USA at a young age but was imprisoned as a result of her political activism and deported to Britain in 1955 where she continued to organise fight for socialism.

Visit Claudia Jones’ grave at Highgate cemetery. Meet at the main gate, Swains Lane, N6 at 1.00 pm on Sunday 19th February 2012. There is a £3.00 entry charge to the cemetery.

Meeting to commemorate Claudia’s revolutionary legacy will be held at 7.00 pm on Tuesday 21st February 2012 (details above). Speakers from Congo and Haiti plus showing of film Poto Mitan: Haitian Women, Pillars of the Global Economy.

Currently in Congo there is a genocide taking place. Over the last decade over 6m people have been killed in a proxy war as transnational companies vie to control the vast mineral deposits of the country. Over the same period 800,000 women, children and men have been raped. The current President Kabila has lost legitimacy in the eyes of many Congolese who are calling for him to go. Women are fighting back against the grotesque violence they are facing and playing a leading role in resistance to the Kabila regime.

As Haiti marks the second anniversary of the earthquake which took 300,000 people’s lives, one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters, 600,000 people still live in tents. Only a fraction of aid money collected has reached the Haitian people who are under UN occupation. Ravaged by cholera (brought in by UN troops) over 600 have died from disease. The situation is further compounded by an epidemic of rape against women. Like the Congo, Haitian women are organising to fight back against this kind of warfare and brutality.

Also Remembering Malcolm X  Bro Malcolm was assassinated on 21 February 1965 it coincides with Comrade Claudia birth date.

US wants to setup a mini-Subic to accomodate rotating American troops -- CPP

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today assailed the US government for seeking to establish another Subic Naval Base in the Philippines, a little smaller perhaps, to service ships and troops being "rotated" in the Asia-Pacific region.

"US plans to setup a mini-Subic military base, service facility or exclusive dock in the Philippines have become increasingly apparent as officials of the Obama government announced it is going to rotate at least 3,300 troops from its Okinawa base in Australia, Singapore, Hawaii and the Philippines.

Testifying before the US Senate Armed Forces Committee, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the Obama government is working to forge an agreement with the Aquino regime similar with that forged with Australia allowing the US military to regularly dock American warships and maintain "rotational" presence.

US officials have announced earlier that it had scrapped initial plans to transfer its 8,000 troops based in Okinawa to its base in Guam, an American territory. Instead, it now plans to transfer only 4,700 troops to Guam and have the rest of its Okinawa-based forces "rotated" in the Asia-Pacific countries.

"The plan to set up facilities in the Philippines for the regular docking of American warships will practically bring back American military bases in the country," said the CPP. "The US wants to use the Philippines as a platform for its power-projection, China-containment and interventionist operations in the Asia-Pacific region."

"The biggest problem of the Filipino peopls is that the Aquino regime is all too willing to provide its masters with all the facilities it needs."

The matter of providing facilities for American troops on rotation in the Philippines was discussed in the Strategic Defense Dialogue (SDD) meeting earlier last month between officials of the US government and the Aquino regime. Aquino's officials have promised the American government that it would come up with concrete proposals for this plan.
An agreement to setup such a facility in the Philippines is one of the agreements that the US seeks to sign in the coming months. Such negotiations are being carried out in the dark by officials of the Obama and Aquino regimes are an affront to Philippine sovereignty.

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today called on the Filipino people to vigorously oppose US imperialist machinations to set up facilities in the Philippines to accomodate thousands of American troops who are to be put on "rotation" in Asia-Pacific waters in the upcoming years.

"The Filipino people must fan the flames of patriotism and stand up against the imperialist machinations of the US to use the Philippines as a platform for their hegemonism," said the CPP.

Morocco: A January of revolt and repression for the new government

The struggles of the Moroccan people have continued with force during the month of January. Labour struggles, peasant struggles, the unemployed, the Amazigh [Berber] movement, the struggle in support of political prisoners and against the impunity of the dictatorship, all over Morocco, people are expressing their unease over the situation and the need for profound, real change. The February 20 Movement is demonstrating in the streets and preparing the first anniversary.

What follows is a short overview of some of the struggles.

Taza

On 4 January following a protest by the Association Nationale des Diplômés Chômeurs du Maroc (ANDCM - National Association of Unemployed Graduates in Morocco), which was the object of police violence, there was an uprising in Taza in which more than 20 people were seriously injured, five of them policemen.

Since then, Taza has undergone an impressive police occupation, which has, however, not prevented continued demonstrations demanding the release of detainees.

On 3 February last there were serious clashes which left more than 150 wounded, with many arrests. The situation is extremely tense.

For more information on the Taza uprising:

Workers struggle: miners in Ben Guérir, agricultural workers, municipal officials...
Workers' struggles continue to shake Morocco, from the explosion of protests by phosphate miners in Ben Guérir, to strikes in various sectors of the civil service and the struggles of farm workers.

For over a year, workers at Ben Guérir phosphates mines belonging to SMESI, a subsidiary of Office Chérifien des Phosphates, a leading Moroccan company, have been demanding satisfaction of their demands.

Tired of being ignored, they have been occupying the explosives dump and threatening to blow it up with themselves inside.

Video and information on the struggle:

Strikes by workers in local government, healthcare, education, etc. are taking off. On the other hand, agricultural workers are keeping up their global campaign claims, while other struggles continue, such as that of farm workers working for Nufribel, a Spanish multinational, in Agadir or on the farms in Tiniguir-Dakhla, belonging to the Domaines Agricoles company, belonging to the king, which are State-owned farms [1].

The struggle of the unemployed, even to the death

Abdelouahab Zaidoune, 27, a postgraduate in law from the University of Fez died on 24 January after setting himself on fire, along with two comrades, outside the Department of Education in Rabat.

The many years of struggle and of being ignored has led this group of graduates to utter despair.

On the other hand, the ANDCM has begun a campaign from its regional, provincial and local branches with demonstrations, rallies, sit-ins, etc., in every corner of Morocco, always linked to popular demands, not only of the unemployed, and in many cases with the involvement and participation of the population, as was the case in Taza.

Solidarity with Greek People from Revolutionary Praxis in Nottingham

On Tuesday, 14th. February a demonstration in support of the struggle of the Greek people was held in Nottingham,England.  A member of Revolutionary Praxis gave the following speech:

'The Greek people are under attack from international bankers, EU governments and the Greek government.  As a result of the machinations and blundering of bankers and politicians the Greek people are being subjected to massive austerity measures – higher taxes, big cuts in wages and pensions, slashing of social services, record unemployment.

The Greek Parliament has voted for even more severe austerity measures demanded by European Central Bank, IMF and various banks.  But the Greek people have had enough. They  are rising in revolt as we saw in Syntagma Square.  This is just the beginning.  There will be more militant protests. The Greeks are showing the way forward for the rest of the people of Europe.

Greece was the birthplace of democracy which means rule by the people.  But in Greece today it is not the people who rule but the capitalist bankers and their political representatives.  The same is true in Britain where all the main political parties – Conservative, Liberal-Democratic and  Labour – are imposing massive cuts in public spending to prop up the capitalist system.  This is rule by the rich, for the rich.

But capitalism is in trouble.  That’s why the political leaders have started burbling about we must have “fair” and “responsible” capitalism, telling bankers to reduce their massive bonuses.  Don’t be taken in.  The real problem is capitalism itself, a system of oppression and exploitation.  It is a system reaching its end, becoming ever more decrepit and dysfunctional.  Capitalism only works for the rich 1% but is no good for the 99%, the rest of us, who do most of the work.  If we do not destroy capitalism, it will destroy us.

In Britain the Coalition Government is holding down earnings, reducing welfare benefits, cutting public services and attacking pensions – all to pay back the bankers the British government borrowed from to prop up the bankrupt bankers.  At the same time Prime Minister Cameron rejects a financial transactions tax claiming that he is defending the British people.  In reality he is defending the interests of his rich friends and relations in finance capital.  He defends the rich, not the poor.

Here in Nottingham the Labour City Council is about to bring in its second cuts budget, knocking £20m off public services while raising Council Tax by 3.5% (Should we pay it?).  It is services for vulnerable groups such as the old, disadvantaged children, young unemployed and the homeless who are particularly hit.  Also 195 council workers will lose their jobs.

People have been protesting about both national and local public service cuts but we must do more.  The politicians don’t care if all we do is sign petitions and demonstrate.  More direct action is necessary and the Greek people have shown the way forward. We need to confront politicians and administrators who are implementing the cuts.  We need to give them a hard time, make them feel nervous, to become afraid to face the people they are attacking.

Nottingham City Council will be meeting on Monday, 5th. March to pass their cuts budget.  We need to mobilize people to demonstrate here at the Council House to tell the Council ‘No Cuts in Nottingham!’  Following the splendid example of our Greek brothers and sisters, we should aim to turn Old Market Square into another Syntagma Square. '

NO CUTS IN NOTTINGHAM!
VICTORY TO THE GREEK PEOPLE!
PEOPLE OF EUROPE, UNITE AND FIGHT!

Release of Jazmines and NDFP consultants not a "side issue" in peace negotiations -- CPP

PRESS RELEASE
CPP Information Bureau
14 February 2012

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today said that the demand for the release of Alan Jazmines and all other consultants of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) is not a "side issue" to the peace negotiations.

The CPP reiterated the demand for the release of Jazmines, who was arrested by military and police operatives exactly a year ago, in complete disregard of his standing as a JASIG-protected consultant. Jazmines, 65, has since been detained at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center in Camp Crame.

"Advocates of peace negotiations are indeed disheartened by the claims made by the Philippine government (GPH), by its chief negotiatior Alex Padilla at that, that the release of Jazmines and other NDFP peace talks consultants in accordance with the JASIG is a simple side issue," said the CPP. The Joint Agreement on Safety and Immunity Guarantees (JASIG) was signed by the NDFP and GPH in 1995 to ensure the safety and immunity of negotiators and others involved in peace negotiations and allow a favorable atmosphere for peace talks.

"Contrary to the claims of Padilla, respect for and compliance with the JASIG have become crucial questions in peace negotiations between the NDFP and the GPH under the Aquino regime," said the CPP.

"How can the safety of the negotiators, consultants and other NDFP personnel involved in peace negotiations be a side issue? How can peace negotiations progress when the Philippine government continues to attack the NDFP's peace consultants and prevent them from performing their work in the peace negotiations," added the CPP.

"In claiming that the demand for the release of detained NDFP consultants is a "side issue", Padilla bares his total disregard of the JASIG and his complicity in the attacks carried out by the GPH and its armed forces and police against JASIG-protected personnel of the NDFP," said the CPP.

"The reactionary Philippine government has been violating with impunity the JASIG for many years," said the CPP. The CPP cited the arrest and prolonged detention of Jazmines and 12 other consultants of the NDFP, the abduction and disappearance of Leo Velasco, Prudencio Calubid, Rogelio Calubad, and a number of other NDFP staff and peace consultants.

Message of solidarity on the anniversary of People's War in Nepal

By LUIS G. JALANDONI
NDFP Chief International Representative
Member, NDFP National Executive Committee

On behalf of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), the New People's Army and on its own behalf, the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) convey warmest congratulations and greetings of comradeship and solidarity to the heroic Nepali people, the United Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) and the People's Liberation Army on this anniversary of the launching of People's War in Nepal.

Together with revolutionary, anti-imperialist and progressive organizations throughout the world, the CPP and NDFP join in commemorating this historic event. We have followed and been inspired by the outstanding achievements of the Nepali people led by their proletarian revolutionary party: numerous successful offensives of the People's Liberation Army, significant gains in agrarian revolution benefiting millions of peasants, the setting up of organs of political power and stable guerrilla bases, recognition of the rights and dignity of the indigenous peoples, and achievements in the organization of women and youth.

The revolutionary struggle succeeded in toppling the hated monarchy, and outstanding gains were achieved in the 2006 elections for the Constituent Assembly, winning about 40% of the total vote, thus becoming the biggest party in the Constituent Assembly.

As the United Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) and the heroic Nepali people persist in their revolutionary path amidst the complexities and new challenges in the current situation, we are confident that the revolutionary struggle in Nepal will win ever greater victories which will be of lasting benefit to the Nepali people. Such revolutionary victories will also redound to the benefit of other oppressed and exploited peoples in their struggle for national and social liberation, and help in building a powerful international anti-imperialist and socialist movement.

The revolutionary Filipino people led by the Communist Party of the Philippines, with the New People's Army and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines, convey their warmest congratulations and best wishes for further revolutionary victories of the Nepali Revolution.

Long live the revolutionary struggle of the Nepali people led by the United Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist)!

Long live the revolutionary solidarity between the Nepali people and the Filipino people!

Long live the international solidarity for building a powerful anti-imperialist and socialist movement!
