India; Atrocious...Arun Ferriera Beaten Up in Police Custody

Friends, in a highly disturbing and atrocious act, Pune police have indulged in yet another illegal and undemocratic act of torturing a person in their custody, granted by the court.

In police custody, as per law, the accused can be further interrogated as part of evidence, but third degree treatment should not be meted out under any circumstances.

But for Pune police, there is no law.

They are law unto themselves.

Please see this news from Pune court today:

"Sudha Bhardwaj, Arun Ferreira and Vernon Gonsalves, all three accused in Bhima Koregaon violence case have been sent to judicial custody for 14 days by Pune Sessions Court.

One of the accused Arun Ferreira alleged in Court that he was beaten up during custodial interrogation. He said on 4th Nov during interrogation he was slapped about 8-10 times by police officials and that on 5th November he was taken to hospital as well.

Punched in the eye by the I.O. (Investigating Officer, a police officer) while being interrogated about IAPL (Indian Association of Peoples' Lawyers)."

Where are the courts? Where is Rule of Law? Where are Fundamental Rights? Where are the protections against arbitrary behaviour of police?
