The government on Sunday appointed General Chhatraman Singh Gurung as the acting Chief of the Army Staff (CoAS).
A meeting of the Council of Ministers took the decision to this effect. The cabinet also accepted COAS Rookmangud Katawal's application for month-long leave before retirement.
The Nepal Army headquarters had forwarded Katawal's leave application to the Office of the President, Ministry of Defence and the Office of the Council of Minister on Friday.
Katawal, who has been at the centre of controversy ever since he became the NA chief in September 2006, will be on leave from Monday
